Fine Arts Membership Drive

Dear Friends,

Thanks to the generous financial support of our patrons and the hard work of our faculty, staff, and volunteers, students of St. Mary’s Colgan Catholic Schools achieved great success in the area of Fine Arts this past year as well as creating lifelong memories. With your continued support, we are confident that this success will continue as we offer our students the ability to give all glory to God while expressing themselves through the arts. As St. John Paul II said “the purpose of the arts is nothing less than the uplifting of the human spirit.”

Lola Wade, with the assistance of Emily Tarter, is now leading the SMC Theatre Department. In the fall of 2018, Emily provided our elementary students the opportunity to perform The Lion King Jr. with over one hundred SME students involved. It was truly an amazing accomplishment! Friends, family, and guests filled the high school auditorium to capacity each night. For many of the young actors, it was their first time on stage. And for most, it will not be their last! With the inclusion of junior high students in the high school drama classes and productions, the theater is alive and well throughout our K-12 schools. In the fall, the junior high/high school produced a Black Box Special. Four plays, Steele Magnolias, God’s Favorite, Sylvia and A Piece of My Heart, were each cut down to 30 minutes then presented in one night. This spring, the musical Cinderella magically transformed the auditorium. Our students glowed with joy and pride on the stage as they performed. The camaraderie of the cast made up of 7th through 12th graders, was obvious. Our art program has also blossomed! SMC art teacher, Rolanda Root, took 20 students with over 50 pieces of art to the CNC Art Fair this past year. SMC students came home with 3 first places, 5 second places, 9 third places and 7 Honorable Mentions! Our band program is also thriving, beginning with all 6th grade students. Forensics and debate will be added to the class schedule for next year. Our students are very fortunate to have a variety of opportunities to express themselves through the arts.

For the first time, SMC held a Drama Reception, similar to the annual Athletic Banquet. Lola and Emily awarded the students with various acting awards, similar to at the Emmy Awards. The students dressed in formal ware for the evening. Three “Payton Awards” were given to students in honor of SMC junior Payton Kannarr who we lost to leukemia on February 7, 2019. Scholarships were also awarded to several students to attend summer theater camps in Kansas City.

We are so thankful to you for giving us the resources to offer a comprehensive Fine Arts program. The variety and quality of our offerings for a school our size is a testimony to your generosity. With your continued support the future looks bright for SMC fine arts! Red Carpet and Star donors receive free admission to our SMC theatrical performances and these patrons will be recognized on the play programs. On behalf of the students and staff, we thank you!

(At this time, the Theatre doors will open for the audience, so no cast member will be allowed on stage, in the theatre, or in the front of the school.)
The Production starts promptly at 7pm.

December 7th: same schedule as explained above will apply to this evening.

December 8th:
Noon call time for all actors
2pm voice warm ups, mic checks, and check props
3pm circle
The house for the audience will open at 3pm and the Production will begin promptly at 3:30pm.
We will also take cast pictures before we strike the set. We will strike the set after the show. If any parents would like to help we could finish quicker.

All rehearsals are after school until 5pm, we walk over together from elementary to high school auditorium. Schedule below replaces any previously schedule information.
